Any real value in silver plated items?
I was dropping off some clothes and books at the local thrift store for a donation on sunday and I typically peruse the furniture (found some nice mid-century stuff there last time that I sold on CL for a nice sum). Anyway, they had about 4 large size silverplated pieces there (12" serving bowl, 15" platter, ice/champagne bucket and a goblet). Total asking price was $8 for all of them combined.
I left them, but it got me wondering how much pure silver there would have been in those items and if anyone would bother with trying to extract it. Maybe when it hits $50+ / oz. |

A lot of refineries won't touch it.
Many won't even touch gold plated stuff. And even if they would, you would have to have a shitload of it to even recover your assay fees. |
Re: Any real value in silver plated items?
If they were physically attractive or collectible as an antique they might be salable. Look at eBay completed auctions.
But not worth it for the silver. |
Re: Any real value in silver plated items?
A typical gold plate coin has about a dollars worth of gold..
silver plated is pretty much junk in terms of its PM value. |

X-ray film is probably worth more than silver plate.

i got carried away and bought a huge silver plated copper goblet. it weighs a few pounds, obviously mostly copper. what confused me was the bottom. i went to a remote corner of the store & scratched it with a key, on the bottom. all white shiney metal, i thought i had scored big. chalk that one up to Education. |
